Bill & Ted fans may have to wait a little longer for the prospective third film, but the actors who played the duo (Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter) are taking a journey into a digital crime saga. Reeves is narrating Winter's documentary, Deep Web, about the arrest of Ross William Ulbricht, recently convicted of being "Dread Pirate Roberts," the creator and operator of online black market Silk Road.
Winter wrote, directed and produced the film, which premieres at SXSW on Sunday and will make its world television premiere on Epix this spring. Their Deep Web collaboration marks the first time Reeves and Winter have worked together in 22 years.
“I'm honored to be working with Alex Winter on his timely and vital documentary, Deep Web” Reeves said in a statement. “The Silk Road and trial of Ross Ulbricht involve many important and complex issues that impact the life of Mr. Ulbricht and us all."
Deep Web explores the secrecy, accusations and criminal activity around the Silk Road case and how the outcome of Ulbricht's trial could set a precedent for technological freedom. The film features exclusive interviews with the Ulbricht family, including Ross' parents, Lyn and Kirk.
Additional interviewees include Ulbricht's lawyer, Joshua Dratel; Wired technology writer Andy Greenberg, who was the first reporter to interview "Dread Pirate Roberts"; crypto-anarchist Cody Wilson, who developed the 3D printed gun; Electronic Frontier Foundation legal director Cindy Cohn; former assistant director for intelligence at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, James Chaparro; and ACLU technologist and privacy and online security advocate Christopher Soghoian.
he Epix original documentary is also produced by Marc Schiller and Glen Zipper. Seth Gordon, Jill Burkhart and Ross Bernard are executive producing.
Content Media is handling international sales and distribution for the doc.
Deep Web isn't the only Silk Road doc in the works. A&E IndieFilms and BBC Storyville announced in November that they partnered with Vice Media's film division and U.K. production company Raw to make The Dread Pirate Roberts, about the rise and fall of Silk Road and Ulbricht.
